• Vancouver Biennial Releases Largest Kusama NFT Ever

  • The Vancouver Biennial is a premier contemporary art festival that invites all visitors to view a 19,000 square foot (1,765 square meter) public art installation. It will exist as physical, augmented reality and based on Yayoi Kusama’s NFT.

    When VR/AR Meets Blockchain: Introducing Kusama’s Voxel Bridge

    The Vancouver Biennial team says a unique artwork will be released at the festival. The largest NFT in history will go live on Polkadot’s “sister chain” Kusama (KSM).

    Visually, the object will represent a giant two-dimensional vinyl mural covering sidewalks, buildings and the underside of a bridge.

    This artwork is unique in that it exists in three multiple worlds at once. First, it is a contemporary art object located near Vancouver’s Combe Bridge.

    Then, it’s a VR/AR file developed by the Spheroid Universe team. It can be seen through a free app for iOS and Android-based smartphones.

    Finally, it will be an NFT cast on the experimental smart contract environment Kusama (KSM), a “canary network” for the Polkadot cross-chain ecosystem.

    A first-of-its-kind art installation experience

    When accessing this VR/AR installation, users can discover the most critical information about the progress and technical design of the Kusama (KSM) blockchain.

    Barrie Mowatt, President and Artistic Director of the Vancouver Biennial, highlights how revolutionary the concept is for mainstream applications of VR and blockchain.

    The Vancouver Biennial has been ahead of the curve, pushing the traditional boundaries of art in public spaces. Now that the definition of public has evolved to mean virtual, we are determined to bring to the world an art installation of great artistic and technological significance.

    Andrey Almiashev, CEO of Spheroid Universe, emphasizes that this object will introduce all digital art lovers to the robustness and eccentricity of Polkadot’s Kusama Network (KSM).

    In the Voxel Bridge project, we visualize the life of the Kusama Network blockchain as a dynamic geolocation-based AR installation, where the key technical challenge is the precise positioning of a giant interactive AR object, which can be achieved not based on markers, but primarily based on photo and video data of the surroundings. We plan to apply this experience in the Polkadot/Kusama network ecosystem to render NFT art AR-objects.
