Spain’s La Liga has become the first of Europe’s top football leagues to offer non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to all its players.
The partnership with French digital football collectibles platform Sorare will allow fans to trade and play fantasy matches with NFTs representing players from Spain’s top 20 clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
The partnership is the first such deal Sorare has struck with one of Europe’s top football leagues, according to Thursday’s announcement.
Sorare plans to strike similar deals with the world’s top 20 leagues by the end of 2022.
Some of the world’s elite individual teams already have NFTs on the platform, including Bayern Munich, Juventus and Liverpool.
The platform’s games allow users to build a team of five players represented by NFTs who compete in various fantasy football tournaments, earning prizes based on the players’ real-life performance.
Sorare will receive $532 million in funding in June, which will make the platform worth more than $3.8 billion.
