• Serena Williams’ husband wore a CryptoPunk NFT at the Met Gala

  • NFT Mania entered the Met Gala after Alexis Ohanian wore a pin featuring him and his wife Serena Williams’ CryptoPunk NFT.

Serena Williams, the most accomplished female athlete in tennis, recently purchased a CryptoPunk NFT with her husband Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, whose outfit at the Met Gala, a masquerade ball, raised a lot of eyebrows. What drew attention to the tennis first was the brooch he wore on his lapel.

The brooch, a CryptoPunk, was a gift from Ohanian to his wife. He tweeted a picture of the couple and his brooch with the initials WAGMI attached to it.The phrase, which means “we’ll make it,” is commonly used by the NFT community.

Ohanian makes big investment in CryptoPunks

Ohanianlater tweeted, “If you haven’t bought a #NFT for your wife …… are you even married?” He also tweeted a link to a specific NFT, CryptoPunk #2950, which he purchased in June for $175,541. Ohanian Wallet’s transaction history shows he spent $1,223,020.91 on seven NFTs. All of these were CryptoPunks, six of which he still owns.

CryptoPunk #2950 is one of 3,840 female versions minted for the project. In all, there are 10,000 digital portraits. In addition, #2950 is a black female with a hijab, which makes NFT even rarer.

Individuals like Ohanian are not alone in buying CryptoPunks in bulk. Major companies are also joining the battle. Most recently, Visa purchased CryptoPunk #7610 for about $150,000.Mask Network also purchased a CryptoPunk last week. They shelled out over $550,000 on CryptoPunk #6128.

These, and other big sales to notables, have sent the price of this series skyrocketing. As of now, one won’t find CryptoPunk for less than $100,000, and prices continue to rise. For example, in August 2021, with such high demand, the price of CryptoPunks rose by over 50% in just 7 days.
