NBA Top Shot will sell “Moments” in honor of the burgeoning Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), with the inaugural package slated to drop Friday.
Dapper Labs’ popular digital collectibles program says the non-fakeable tokens (NFTs) will initially feature highlights of the top players in league history.Caty Tedman, head of partnerships at Dapper Labs, talks about the collection of dunks, splashes and game-winning shots from 25 years ago.
“We really looked at the quality of the game and tried to attract the best players this season,” said Caty Tedman.
The expansion comes as the WNBA looks to capitalize on a surge of new fans. Buoyed by strong ratings – a recent game had 755,000 viewers, the highest rating for a regular-season broadcast since 2012 – the league has been making deals with streaming services and now licensing partners.
“They’re the only major team sports property that has increased its TV audience through a pandemic,” Tedman said.
The new NFTs will coexist with NBA Top Shot’s men’s “moments” to create the basketball “ecosystem” that Tedman said she’s been pursuing since the first package dropped in 2020.
“What we really want to do is create parity between the men’s and women’s leagues,” Tedman said.
